Security and protection

You often book a trip well in advance and pay part of the price upfront. That is why we explain here, in plain terms, how your travel money is protected, who stands behind that protection and where its limits lie.

What is GGTO?

GGTO provides financial protection for the money you pay for your trip if the travel organiser becomes insolvent. Sultan Travel B.V. is listed as an affiliated travel organiser.

This protection stems from the European Package Travel Directive (Directive (EU) 2015/2302). Because it is European legislation, it also applies to travellers from Belgium, Germany, France and the rest of the EU, not just to travellers from the Netherlands.

The protection is intended for package travel, such as a combination of flight and hotel. If you are unsure whether your booking is a package, just ask us. We are happy to explain how your booking is put together.

What is the VvKR?

The VvKR is a trade association of small-scale travel organisers. Sultan Travel is a member, member number 21034.

Membership says something about the kind of organisation you are booking with and the sector we work in. However, the VvKR is not a guarantee fund. It therefore does not protect your travel money in the event of insolvency.

The difference at a glance

  • GGTO: financial protection of your travel money if the travel organiser becomes insolvent, under the European Package Travel Directive.
  • VvKR: trade association of small-scale travel organisers, member number 21034. Not a guarantee fund.

These are two different things and one does not replace the other. Protection of your travel money in case of insolvency runs through GGTO, not through the VvKR.

What this protection is not

GGTO’s protection concerns the insolvency of the travel organiser. It is neither travel insurance nor cancellation insurance. If you also want cover against illness, an accident or a cancellation on your side, consider taking out suitable insurance.

Travel insurance and cancellation insurance

Sultan Travel does not sell insurance itself. You arrange travel or cancellation insurance yourself after booking, with an insurer of your own choosing. If you would rather not search, two a.s.r. links are ready below.

Mind the deadline on cancellation insurance. a.s.r. states that you take it out within seven days of booking. Wait longer and you can no longer take it out for this trip.

We do not advise you on which cover suits you; we are not permitted to. Which events are covered, and which are not, is set out in a.s.r.’s terms. Put questions about that directly to a.s.r.

Insurance is not the same as the GGTO protection above. GGTO protects your travel money if we become insolvent. Travel insurance covers what happens during your trip, cancellation insurance what happens before departure.
